Web Access for People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Remember that some visitors to your site will have hearing issues. Therefore online audio files will need text transcripts, and multimedia video files will need closed-captioning and transcripts.


Issues:

  • Remember that audio or other multimedia may not be intrinsically accessible for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Some people have auditory processing issues which make it difficult for them to learn material well if they are only able to hear it.
  • Also, students may be studying in a noisy atmosphere. You cannot assume that students have access to headphones/speakers on every computer station.
