What is a Podcast?More or less a podcast is a downloadable audio (and less frequently video "vidcasts"or "vodcato tosts") file that people could access from a computer and/or portable media player (MP3 player, Apple iPod, etc.). You could use a voice program like Dragon Naturally Speaking to create a transcript using the WAV version of your audio. Or you could pay 75-cents per minute (not an unreasonable price at all) to have castingWords.com transcribe it for you (I haven't tried this service yet myself). 4. How-to for video Vodcasting1. Create a transcript of your audio file. 2. Chop up the transcript to create a caption file using MAGpie and Apple QuickTime Pro -- the free Quicktime won't work. See "Creating the Quicktime Text Track" from Webaim.org 3. Export the caption file as Plain text. Edit the resulting .txt file by adding the following on top (copy and paste the next 4 lines into NotePad or some other plain text editor):
and make sure all the time codes are in this format: [00:00:00.00] You will probably need to add a leading 0. You can experiment with changing the size of the captions in the {size: 20} tag above. 4. Caption the QuickTime Video. See "Using Quicktime to Add Captions" from Webaim.org except in step 8: do the following for QuickTime Pro 7: Window > Show Movie Properties, on the Text Track Visual Settings tab, set the offset to move the caption down. Play with the size and offset until it looks good. 5. Save the resulting Quicktime .MOV file with the overlaid subtitles. 6. Use ListGarden RSS Feed Generator Program to create the XML file for the vodcast. 7. Upload your subtitled .MOV (or MP4) video file, XML file, and the transcript to a web server (Blackboard) 8. The freeware Subtitle Workshop can also be used to create the subtitles, but I found it more difficult to time stamp the captions than MAGpie. However, Subtitle Workshop does make it easier to SaveAs "QuickTime text" without having to edit the resulting text file.
A transcript MUST be provided whether it is a podcast or a vodcast so that our students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing can access the content even if they don't have the necessary multimedia software. Questions/Comments, please contact:
