Welcome to the High Tech Center. The HTC is a computer-assisted instruction lab for students with disabilities. Course Description: (0.5 - 4 units lecture / lab) Students with verifiable disabilities will be provided individualized training in adapted microcomputer hardware, software and related applications; individualized assessment to select appropriate computer applications; and keyboarding experience for adapted computer use. Units offered may vary by semester. Consult Schedule of Classes for section information. Repeatable to a maximum of 16 enrollments/units. Credit-Special Class – CR/NC grade only

Course Objectives:

1. Complete individualized assessment to determine most appropriate computer adaptations.

For example, complete Student Educational Contract (SEC) and then complete a skills checklist or posttest.

2. Access assistive technology using computers.

For example, learn Dragon Naturally Speaking, ZoomText, JAWS, Kurzweil 3000, ReadPlease, and/or how to use a rollerball.

3. Use keyboarding skills sufficient to operate personal computers.

For example, practice independently with Typing Tutor, learning one-handed keyboarding, and/or small group instruction in Microsoft Word word processing.

4. Use introductory knowledge and skills of various computer applications.

For example, attend the Microsoft Word, Office Applications or Internet miniclasses.

Course Requirements (grading):

  • Your grade for this class will be either Credit or No Credit based on your progress towards your goal(s) and attendance in the High Tech Center.
  • Each student must make measurable progress towards attaining their SEC (Student Educational Contract) goal(s) in order to receive Credit and to reenroll for future semesters in the High Tech Center. Measurable progress may be demonstrated through one or more of the following as identified on the individual student’s SEC goals sheet: (1) completion of a Student Educational Contract (SEC) goal, (2) improvement on post test as compared to pretest, and/or (3) attainment of, or demonstrated improvement towards, one or more skills during the semester.
  • Students must complete the posttest or final skills checklist at the end of the semester in order to demonstrate their progress on their SEC goal(s). It is recommended that the posttest or final skills checklist be taken either during the last class week of the semester or during final exams week.
  • You need to attend the High Tech Center for the number of hours based on your enrolled units in order to receive Credit. If you enrolled in 1 unit you would need to log a total of 36 hours by the end of the semester. For each .5 unit, you need 18 hours. Make sure you log in every time you come to the High Tech Center. Let a staff person know if you forgot to log in or log out.
  • Students must attend their scheduled computer times unless other arrangements have been made with the instructor. Students must be in present in the High Tech Center during the time they are logged in unless otherwise negotiated with the instructor.

Student Responsibilities:

  • Please be on time for your scheduled class meeting time. If you know you are going to be late beforehand, please let us know if possible. You may e-mail us or call the High Tech Center (see contact information).
  • Arrive on time for your assigned session at the HTC, log in, and get your file folder out of the drawer labeled “STUDENT FILES.” Please see the Goals Sheet on the inside of your student folder for the class schedule (this schedule is subject to change). Your actual class meeting times will be arranged with an instructor during the intake process. Look up your assignment and start independently if possible. You must be here within 10 minutes after your assigned time in order to hold your reservation.
  • Keep a written record of your daily work in your student file folder. This is one way we have of documenting your ongoing progress. If you have trouble knowing what to write, please ask for help.
  • Please turn off any cell phones and/or beepers during class time while in the HTC. These can be very disruptive when people are trying to listen and concentrate.
  • You will need at least two 3-1/2" high density floppy diskettes to save your work. You may also find a ZIP 100MB disk or a USB Flash Drive useful. Students who need to listen to e-text should bring their own headphones. Students who will be using Dragon NaturallySpeaking should bring their own microphone headsets.
  • Like the rest of the college, we work on a 50-minute hour. Please close out the program you are working before the hour so that the next student will be able to start on time.
  • Please contact us if you will miss your scheduled class meeting time. You may be able to make up hours missed and to learn what you have missed by coming in on a “drop-in” basis to work on a computer.
  • If you miss more than two (2) scheduled computer times during the semester without canceling your appointment, or if you need to cancel your scheduled time more than three (3) times, your name may be erased from the appointment board, and your scheduled time may be given to someone else.

Please refer to the Guidelines for Computer Use for our specific classroom rules. See http://hightech.redwoods.edu/rules.htm

  • You are finished when you have reached the number of hours required for the unit(s) in which you are enrolled. If you wish to continue coming to the HTC after your hours are completed, you will need to enroll for additional units. Please see one of the DSPS counselors or an HTC instructor.
  • GUID 379 is repeatable to a maximum of 16 enrollments/units. Repeatability waivers for additional enrollment beyond 16 units may be allowed under certain circumstances if the student continues to demonstrate measurable progress. If a student wants to continue attending GUID 379 past 16 enrollments/units, the student shall make a formal request. Based on the professional judgment of High Tech Center faculty as to the student’s ability to continue making measurable progress, a petition must be filed and reviewed by the Director of Disabled Students Programs and Services. The final recommendation may then be made to the Associate Vice President for Student Learning Support Services or designee.

The above procedures requirements are subject to change in the event of extenuating circumstances.
